HOW TO GET YOUR MEDICINE

If you need new medicine, please contact your doctor.

If you need medicine you have taken before, this is called a repeat prescription.

HOW TO ASK FOR REPEAT MEDICINE

We do not accept repeat medicine requests over the phone, except if:

• You cannot use the internet or write because of illness or disability, and

• You are unable to leave your home, or have another serious reason.

You can ask for repeat medicine by:

• Using the NHS App

• Using SystmOnline

• Using the Anima online system

• Writing your request on paper and putting it in the prescription box near the reception desk

WHEN CAN YOU ASK BY PHONE?

You may request repeat medicine by phone only if:

• You have difficulty using the internet or writing due to problems like poor eyesight, no internet access, or disability

• You live in a care home or have staff helping you with your medicine

• You are very unwell or in hospital and cannot use other methods

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

• Please ask for your medicine at least two weeks before you run out

• It usually takes two to three days to process your request

URGENT MEDICINE REQUESTS

We only accept urgent medicine requests for:

• Diabetes medicines

• Medicines for breathing problems

• GTN spray for chest pain

All other urgent requests will be treated as normal repeat requests.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU RUN OUT OF MEDICINE

• Ask your pharmacist if they can give you a small emergency supply

• You can also use the NHS 111 app to ask for emergency medicine

• If the pharmacist cannot help, go to the walk-in centre or call 111

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines.  Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
